Chair – Frances Soames
Most people know me as the Practice Manager at Thornton Dental. I have worked there since I was 21 when the Practice first opened and I really enjoy my job . I have lived in Thornton all my life except for 4 years in Queensbury but I was so glad to return to the village!
I started volunteering at the Community Centre after the death of my husband Gary 4 years ago, and I have helped with cleaning, decorating and helping with events. I’ve been Chair person since 2019 and help with the policies and Fire Marshalling and many other things. A lot has been achieved at the centre over the last few years and I am very proud to be part of it.
Vice Chair – Manny McKenzie
Having moved to live in Yorkshire in 1988, I have been a resident of Thornton for the past 22 years. I retired from working in NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in 2014 since when I have been able to become more involved in local community activities, in particular helping to organise the two Thornton Galas in 2018 and 2019, and being a volunteer at Thornton Community Library from 2017 onwards. I have been vice chair of the Community Centre since 2019.
Secretary – Gordon Payne
Originally from Suffolk, I was Headteacher of a large comprehensive school and community college in Coventry. I retired in 2010, and spent much of my time enjoying travelling around the world.
In 2015 we made the decision to move to Thornton to be near family and our first grandchild and it was the best decision of my life. I love living here For many reasons, but one of them is the friendliness, openness and honesty of many of the people I have met. Originally a volunteer helping run Thornton Library in 2017 and then joined Community Centre committee in 2019.
Treasurer – Sharon Bewes
I’m a relative newcomer to Thornton, having moved here from Bolton just 20 years ago! We are lucky in that we get the best of both worlds living in the countryside and being a stones through away from the city if you need it. The scenery is second to none and I love learning about the history of the village and people. A quick visit to Market Street can become an expedition and becomes a catch-up with a neighbour, friend or helping a stranger. You never know what will happen.
I’ve been involved in the Community Centre since the volunteer group took over from the council in 2018, and have been Treasurer since 2019.
